Life in the Waiting

They say that your character isn't made in the big moments of life - it's simply revealed in them. They say, rather, that your character is made in the little everyday, mundane, nothing moments: how do you treat your cat? What do you do in a minor ethical dilemma at the office? Who does your landlord say that you are?

I don't have a cat, I'm still in school, and I live with my parents.

Don't get me wrong - this is one hundred percent NOT a complaint! I've got a lot going on, and I am totally fulfilled, but this is a season of preparation and that means that a lot of the dreams and goals in life right now are like a plane in a holding pattern. I'm about to take off and soar into the unknown, but in the meantime, even the little everyday, mundane, nothing moments aren't what they'll be once I'm airborne. For now, my Life is in the Waiting.

So who will I be in the waiting?

Fearful?      Anxious?      Doubting?      Bitter?

What about a woman of peace, of trust, or of faith?

What about a woman who can literally "laugh at the days to come"? I love that verse in Proverbs 31. There is a lot in the chapter that I don't even aspire to - I can't spin wool or twist fiber or inspect a field and plant a vineyard - but I do aspire to be so enveloped in the love of God and so trusting of His will for my life that I can literally laugh at the days to come. And I don't mean a laughter of spite or flippancy. I'm talking about deep joy in the face of uncertainty. Joy that says 'I may walk, this morning, into the loss of something I care about or the beginning of a brand new adventure or even the end of my life. Come what may, my future is secure.'

I want to be that woman. One who, during Life in the Waiting, still dreams and grows and pursues the will of God. One who trusts that the timing for her release is determined by a wisdom deeper than her own.

There's a song - it's actually pretty old by now - called Everything by Tim Hughes. It must have been a decade ago, but I had a moment with this song, and I still come back to it like one of those old altars that the Israelites built to remind themselves of where they had come from and what the Lord had done.

Today what I'm remembering is this:

God in my hoping
There in my dreaming
God in my watching
God in my waiting
...
Be my everything
You are everything

Is it just me, or do those blessings look an awful lot like sheep?

Maybe it's because Christmas is around the corner and one of my favourite movies is "White Christmas", but today I've been walking around school thinking of Bing Crosby singing to me... When you're worried and you can't sleep Just count your blessings instead of sheep And you'll fall asleep counting your blessings. I don't often have trouble sleeping (unless you count trouble waking up lately!), but the message is a good one just the same...not to mention how lovely it is to have Bing's smooth voice running through your head all day. I can be such a self-focused person - emphasizing my lack, comparing myself with others, counting my concerns and inadequacies like Scrooge counting his coins (since we're on a Christmas story allusion kick). What was up with Scrooge anyway? He was totally miserable counting his money, but isn't money a blessing? Maybe, like so much else, it depends on whether you notice it and how you view it... For ...

Word.

I like to think of myself as being a pretty 'down with it' person - I've got swag, I like to rap nursery rhymes, I even use the peace sign to say hi to my friends. All in all, I'm pretty gangster...at least according to me. And since I'm so gangster, I have it on good authority that my title for this post is, quite simply, epic. Why? because it has two meanings. Firstly - it sounds super gangster! 'word.' (I'm imagining a super g'd up from the feet up guy saying it right now...and now I'm picturing my good friends, Mark and Jeremy, laughing at me for even trying to be gangster at all. Come on guys, work with me here!!)...word. Secondly (and more to the point) - it is, in fact, a part of my life that I cannot survive without. The Word. The Bible. Literally God-breathed words that challenge my will, change my mind, and settle my heart. I haven't performed the study, but I can tell you that based on observation alone, there is a stron...

Organic Chemistry, Admissions, and My Identity

Wait wait wait!!! Don't run away - this is most definitely NOT one of my nerdy posts. Yes, it mentions organic chemistry, but I don't understand it enough to have any deep allegorical insights into the human condition after studying it. So you're safe. In fact, my lack of comprehension of this subject is what I want to talk about today. You see final exam weeks are about to start for university students everywhere, and, for me, this point in the semester is almost invariably marked by 1) hours of endless studying, 2) hours of guiltily procrastinating, and 3) hours of calculating what my GPA will be 'If I get ____ on the final'. Forgive me if I'm assuming too much here, but I think that's pretty much the way it goes for everyone. But maybe this next piece isn't the way everyone operates; maybe it's just me, although I doubt it. Inevitably, there are semesters that are just plain difficult. You have a lot of external commitments, or you've work...
